Zoning Issues
There are several Zoning Chapters being amended and some new ones on the way as well. The Zoning & Planning board has been meeting additional dates outside of their regularly scheduled 3rd Thursday of the month. Their next meeting is 10/16 at 6:30PM and another on 10/22/2025, all held at City Hall, 206 S. Main Street, Three Forks. City Council Public Hearings
The Three Forks City Council will hold public hearings on October 14, 2025, at 6:00PM to consider the following items:
- A Resolution Noting the Assessment List of Delinquent Fees for Weed Removal, Administrative Fees and Penalty;
- A Resolution Amending the Total Number of Permits for Residential Chickens
- A Resolution to Consider Changing the November 11, 2025 City Council Meeting and Announcing a Rescheduled Public Hearing on due to it Falling on Veteran’s Day
- A Resolution Amending the Existing Unwritten Policy of Accepting Deposits on Water/Sewer Accounts for those in Tenant Names, and Ceasing to Send Additional Copies to Property Owners when Tenants Receive Late/Disconnect Notices; Setting a New Policy Effective 1/1/2026 any New Accounts will No Longer be Placed in Tenants’ Name, and any Deposits on Record will be Applied to those Accounts
- First Reading of an Ordinance Amending Title 6, Chapter 4A, Section to Reduce the Required Neighbor Notice from 300-feet to 150-feet for Additional Dog Permit Applications
- Amending the Established Mills to be Levied for FY2025-2026 (Original Resolution #453-2025 on 8/26/2025)
- First Reading of the following Ordinances (knowing the existing numbering will be affected until all chapters are adopted):
- Title 11 Zoning Regulations, Chapter 1: Purpose – Authority – Jurisdiction – Basic Principles
- Title 11 Zoning Regulations, Chapter 2: Vested Rights – Nonconforming Lots, Uses, Structures
- Title 11 Zoning Regulations, Chapter 3 Zoning Districts; Boundaries with Chapter 3: Actors in the Administration of these Regulations
- Title 11 Zoning Regulations, Chapter 5 Agricultural Districts with Chapter 5: Zoning Permit Procedures
- Title 11 Zoning Regulations, Chapter 7: Appeals and Variance Procedures
These hearings will be held at City Hall located at 206 S. Main Street, Three Forks, Montana. The drafted resolutions may all be found on our website at www.threeforksmontana.us/public-notices.
The second reading of the ordinances mentioned above will be heard in November, however due to the resolution mentioned above about whether or not the Council wishes to reschedule its public hearing from 11/11/2025 to another November date, the second reading date has not yet been determined. They will be on the agenda of the first meeting in November, whatever date that is set for at the 10/14/2025 meeting.

Council Seat Vacant 1/1/2026
We will have one vacant Council seat as of 1/1/2026 due to not enough folks filing for the elected positions available. This appointment would complete the remainder of a four-year term, so be for two years, expiring on December 31, 2027. When vacancies exist outside of the election process, the City defaults to the process as defined in the City Charter:
Section 2.09 Filling Vacancy on Council
When a vacancy occurs in the office of council member, the position shall be considered open and subject to nomination and election at the next general municipal election, except the term of office shall be limited to the unexpired term of the person who originally created the vacancy. Pending such election and qualification the council shall appoint by the affirmative vote of four council members, a person possessing the qualifications for office required by law and this Charter, within 30 days of the vacancy to hold the office until the successor is elected and qualified.
Qualifications for Office:
Every resident of the City of Three Forks who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of Montana and a qualified elector pursuant to Article IV, Section 2 of the Montana Constitution, and §7-4-4401, MCA is eligible to hold the office of council member.
Interested candidates shall submit a letter stating their interest to the City Clerk at cturner@threeforksmontana.us or via mail or hand delivery to City Hall (206 Main Street / PO Box 187, Three Forks, MT 59752). Listing any additional details about yourself you think make you a great candidate would be appreciated but are not required. Letters of interest will be accepted for 30 days, and are due by December 9, 2025.
Appointment of this vacancy is scheduled for 6PM on December 9, 2025, and will be continued to a future hearing if no appointment occurs on said date.
